Use Motus for the current federal record

A safer insurance-check workflow

A carrier record is not a single yes-or-no insurance badge. Follow the authority that applies to the work and keep the check date with your result.

    Confirm the company

    Match the USDOT number, legal and DBA names, address, and docket number. Similar names are not enough.

    Check the applicable authority

    In Motus, expand Operating Authority Registration(s) and choose the authority type tied to the proposed operation.

    Read the filing and dates

    Compare the minimum required with the amount filed. Review status, received and effective dates, and any cancellation date.

    Preserve and recheck

    Record the time, source, authority, and discrepancies. Recheck close to onboarding, dispatch, renewal, or payment.

What the filing fields mean

Active or pending insurance
The filings currently associated with the selected authority. Include history only when you intentionally need past or cancelled records.
BIPD, cargo, bond, or trust
Different authority and entity types can require different forms of financial responsibility. Do not assume every carrier has the same requirement.
Effective and cancellation dates
Dates can make an otherwise active-looking record time-sensitive. Recheck when a cancellation or authority action is close.

What this lookup does not prove

  • • An active USDOT registration is not automatically active operating authority.
  • • One federal filing is not the carrier’s complete private insurance policy.
  • • A filing does not show every exclusion, endorsement, contract requirement, or state-law obligation.
  • • USDOTData does not replace FMCSA, an insurer, legal counsel, or a qualified compliance professional.

FMCSA insurance lookup questions

How do I look up a carrier’s FMCSA insurance?

Search for the carrier by USDOT number, company name, or MC/MX/FF docket number, then open the matching carrier’s Insurance view. Detailed USDOTData filings are part of the full carrier report; confirm time-sensitive authority and filing status in FMCSA Motus.

Is an active USDOT number proof of active insurance?

No. USDOT registration, operating authority, and authority-specific financial responsibility answer different questions. Check the applicable authority and its current filing rather than relying on the USDOT status alone.

Does every motor carrier need the same insurance amount?

No. Federal requirements vary by entity, operating authority, cargo, vehicle type, and passenger capacity. Motus shows the minimum tied to the selected authority; unusual cases should be confirmed against current FMCSA guidance and 49 CFR Part 387.

Should I still use FMCSA Licensing & Insurance (L&I)?

FMCSA says L&I has been historical-only since May 14, 2026 and does not reflect new Motus filings. Use Motus for current activity and legacy L&I only for historical context.
